Refrigeration monitoring for grocery stores: what to ask before you buy.

Start with your controllers, not the brochure.

List your stores, the refrigeration controller in each, its firmware and how it connects to the network. Ask every vendor to confirm support for your actual equipment, store by store. “Works with most controllers” is not an answer.

Ask who answers the alarm at 3 a.m.

Some systems send alarms to an app or email and stop there. Others have people watching. Pick a real after-hours alarm from last year and ask the vendor to walk through it: who sees it, who they call, what happens if nobody answers, and when your contractor is contacted.

Temperature sensors or controller data?

Wireless temperature sensors tell you a case is warm. Controller data can tell you why: a rack losing refrigerant, a compressor in distress, a setpoint that has drifted. For food safety logging, sensors may be enough. For protecting racks and compressors, you need the controller.

Questions to put to every vendor.

• Which of our controllers can you connect today, and what do the rest need?
• Is alarm monitoring staffed by people 24/7, or automated notifications only?
• Will you alert us when a controller stops communicating?
• How do you detect refrigerant leaks, and what did it catch for a customer like us?
• Can our contractor get their own remote access?
• What does IT need to review, and how is access secured?
• What are the hardware, installation, subscription and support costs per store?
• What happens to our data if we leave?

Prove it in your own stores.

Start with a few representative stores, including one that gives you trouble. Record the baseline: alarms, service calls, refrigerant added, product loss. Agree what success looks like before you begin, and who will act on what the system finds.
