What does grocery refrigeration monitoring cost? What drives the price per store.
The parts of a refrigeration monitoring quote, what makes it cost more or less per store, and how to weigh it against the cost of one failure.
What you are paying for.
A refrigeration monitoring quote usually has four parts. Knowing them makes quotes comparable.
- Connection: getting data out of each store, either from the refrigeration controllers you already have or from new sensors.
- Software: dashboards, analytics, reports and remote access, usually a subscription per store.
- Monitoring service: people watching alarms and calling your team around the clock, if the vendor offers it.
- Onboarding and support: setting up stores, escalation lists, standards and training.
What makes it cost more or less.

| Sensors vs. controller data | Wireless temperature sensors are cheap per point but only see temperature. Controller data sees racks, compressors and leaks. |
| Staffed vs. automated alarms | A staffed desk that calls people costs more than app notifications, and it is the part that saves product at 3 a.m. |
| Analytics | Leak detection, compressor protection and setpoint audits add value beyond alarms. |
| Number of stores | Larger estates usually get a lower price per store. |
Weigh it against one failure.
The useful comparison is not monitoring against nothing. It is monitoring against the failures it prevents. From our own case studies: one compressor replacement cost about C$21,000 including the crane; one leaking rack was costing an estimated $58,000 a year in refrigerant and service; one freezer failure before dawn ended with no product lost because someone answered the alarm.
